School Rules

Assertive Discipline is followed throughout Hope Wood Academy, and students follow 5 school rules.

Rules

Follow directions the first time of telling.

Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

Be polite – do not swear, name call or say rude things.

Be in the right place at the right time.

Do not take, or mess about with other people’s property.

Attendance (including what to do if your child is unwell)

At Hope Wood Academy, we expect all students to attend regularly to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. Regular school attendance and educational attainment are inextricablylinked. We recognise that regular attendance at school is essential for good learning and continual progressand ensures that students get the best possible outcomes from their period in compulsory education. Allschool staff will work with students and their families to ensure each student attends school regularly andpunctually.

We expect all of our students to aspire to 100% attendance and appreciate the full support of parents and carers in encouraging this. The school has targets to improve attendance and your child has an important part to play in meeting these.

What to do if your child is absent

If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, please ring school on (0191) 5691420 and report their absence to the Business Support staff in the main office before 9am.

Sickness and Diarrhoea

In recent times, a number of parents have raised concerns over the school policy concerning sickness and diarrhoea.

The school follows the Northumberland Tyne and Wear Health Protection Unit (HPU) guidelines which state:

‘A child should not return to school following a bout of diarrhoea and sickness until they are symptom free for48 hours to minimise the risk of a recurrence at school’

Term Time Holidays

As you may be aware the Department of Education has announced that as from 1st September 2013 Headteachers will no longer be able to grant permission for any leave of absence for students (including holidays) during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances, this includes any holidays already booked.

 School Uniform

Smart appearance is very important and sets the tone for everything we do. If we are well presented and tidy it is likely that our minds and work will be the same.

We ask that you support Hope Wood Academy in insisting that your child/children to conform to uniform policy. For more information about uniform, do not hesitate to speak with Jordan Hackles in the main office.

Pupil Uniform:

  • Navy fleeces, jumpers, or cardigans
  • Sky blue polo shirt
  • Black trousers or skirt (as appropriate)
  • Primary pupils may wear shorts
  • Black Blazers
  • Navy and Light Blue Tie

PE Kit

  • Navy shorts, white t-shirt, white soled trainers or plimsolls

Please note:

No jewellery apart from an single metal stud in each ear.

School Meals

Pupils can be purchased at the school or your child has an option to bring a pack lunch.

Mobile Phones and other Hand Held Devices

Pupils are NOT allowed to bring items such as mobile phones. MP3 players, cameras etc into school.  If these items are brought into school, they MUST be left in the main office until home time.

School Planner

We encourage home-school communication through home school diaries in primary and school planners within secondary and 16-19 Learning. The planners are used to help pupils organise their learning, collect Hope Wood Stars and aid communication with home. Please encourage your son/daughter to utilise the planner and remember to bring it into school each day and take it home each day.

Timings of the school day

Pupils arrive on local authority transport or with their parents between 8:45 – 9:00am.  School day consists of 6 lessons with a 15 minutes break in the morning and an hour taken for lunch.  School finishes at 3:10pm when pupils are collected by their parents or local authority transport.

 

On 3 evenings a week the Academy offer extra curricular opportunities such as sports club, film club, newsletter club and performing arts club.  There is a plan to further expand this provision in September 2016.

Emergency closure procedures

In the event of an emergency we will endeavour to notify families and transport as early as possible. A message will be placed on our social media sites (Facebook and Twitter), we will text out to first priority contact numbers and we will put on the front page of the website to inform parents/carers of school closures.
